I miss you lipstick

I miss you lipstick … more so on this National Lipstick Day.

My fascination with colour cosmetics started very young.

Although I regularly wore kajal (traditional eye liner) from childhood, in our culture it was not considered as “make up”. Make-up was something only for special occasions/ outings and such occasions were rare in a year.

Mom’s lipstick was the only colour cosmetic in the house and it doubled up as a rouge and sometimes for experimental basis as eye shadow as well.

Being a full time mother, mom never had a repertoire of other cosmetics and she never felt the need to have one.

However, our Bhojpuri neighbour wore a bright red lipstick even while at home. Her face almost lit up when she adorned that lipstick and a fluorescent bright “sindoor” she put in her hair parting. That image is still so vivid in my memory.

She was the protagonist personified of the popular Bhojpuri song of recent times “Tu lagavelu jo lipishteek…lollipop laagelu” ! As a child, I used to wonder why she wore lipstick at home.

Lip stick and lip gloss became regular wear items when I started my corporate life. I just loved my (small) make up kit.

The world of make up just expanded with my stint at L’Oreal and product evaluation projects made me more indulgent as well !

Lipstick was and is my favourite make-up item as with minimal effort it adds colour to my pale complexion. It has such a feel good effect that sometimes I feel sorry for men who can not wear it (barring celebrities though).

Alas, COVID arrived and make-up cabinet went into quarantine. Mask took away lipstick’s freedom and it didn’t seem right to just sit all made-up in zoom calls.

Lip liners and lip balms in subtle colours have taken over.

Eyeliners and eyeshadows are eyeing this opportunity for business boom.

Stepping out of home with just a lipbalm under my mask is no fun — I miss you lipstick !
